Boston's Lovewhip dedicate themselves to finding the spot where African, Jamaican and Latin music meet for dancing and drinks on their album Whip It Baby! Lovewhip is an excellent companion to a summers day. By now borrowed grooves from Africa are nothing new and if anything the ante has been upped. Lovewhip has taken liberal doses of juju music and used it as an engine to drive a train full of good old Americana down the line. I heard a distinctive early rock and roll mixed with the freewheeling backbeat. Vocalist Erin Harpe would sound at home singing the blues or country. Lovewhip's music also features a much wider range of tempos and melodies than its cousin ska offers. It's a unique sounding album and worth hearing. With all the various groups who have sampled from the land of Africa, Lovewhip can lay claim to a singular sound and that's something special.

There is just something about the sound that is brought together by combining horns and guitars that makes music so happy and enjoyable. Top it off with great vocals and a smooth arrangement and you have Lovewhip. Their world pop sound incorporates jazz, reggae, ska, and great musicianship to create a great sound and excellent collection of songs. "Whip it Baby!" is a well written album that contains eight excellent tracks, each one with a style and texture that is unmatched by anyone I've heard. Erin Harpe has one of the best sounding voices in music and I believe could sing just about anything and make it sound exceptional. Every track on the CD is worth mentioning, but the songs that are sticking in my head right now are 'No More You,' 'Come Down J.J.' and 'Bodega, My Son.' These songs have that uplifting groove that is pure excitement. Each song on the album gives the listener the image of a great party-like atmosphere. I was very pleased with this CD and really can't wait to hear it again. I haven't been this excited about a CD or band in a long time. Lovewhip creates great music, it's that simple.

A sassy and bold album complete with a salsa and ska sound that at times is remniscent of Blondie and others including the Talking Heads, but all in all a completely unique sound for Lovewhip. Up-tempo tunes carry you through movers such as Rudies In Stereo, Nairobi and I Don't Care to close out the album. The trumpets and brass causes the groove along with a reggae/salsa rhythm.

It would be too easy to say that Lovewhip is a ska band, or a reggae band, or a soukous band, or a Carribean band, or a dancehall band. Their complex, island-inflected rhythms combine and clash so recklessly with salsa guitars, a chewy horn section, relentless percussives, and Erin Harpe’s downright, deliberate, lounge-lizard vocal approach, that it makes my head spin. I can count bands that evoke this kind of sound on one foot and Lovewhip’s latest cd, "Whip It Baby!", will take you to island ecstasy faster than 100 proof Captain Morgan’s sipped from a coconut. Lovewhip is Club Med for the soul. Yeah!!!
